        • Civil Engineering Institute

          The Civil Engineering department is originated from the Mining Infrastructure subject built in 1953. The department started to recruit undergraduate and graduate students of geotechnical engineering and structural engineering in 1980, and PhD students of structural engineering in 1986. The department is one of the earliest departments authorized for PhD programs in China. The Civil Engineering is recognised as a key subject in Liaoning province. After accumulation of research works for half a century, the Civil Engineering department has built up a synthetic research and teaching complex involving structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and geomaterials. The research work in the department also involves composite structure, structure detection and reinforcement, underground infrastructure, foundation engineering, structure disaster prevention, geomaterials, rock fracture and failure, cement grouting, anchor technique and modern computational mechanics. Some academic results reach very high level among the international community. The department currently has 29 faculty members, including 10 professors, 10 associate professors, 6 lecturers and 3 laboratory staffs. More than 10 faculties have experience of research in foreign universities, such as universities in US, UK, Russia, Canada and Japan. The Civil Engineering department maintains collaborative relationships with these universities, and hosts international conferences for 5 times.

          The courses offered in the Civil Engineering department are mainly related to civil infrastructure, bridge engineering and underground structure. The graduates will get trained in many different aspects of civil engineering. Currently, the department recruits more than 110 undergraduate students each year, and more than 50 master students studying structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering mechanics and architecture and civil engineering, and more than 20 PhD students in the same research directions.

          The Civil Engineering department built up a laboratory centre based on the 211 project, including grouting lab, geomechanics and geomaterial lab, geotechnical testing lab, engineering structure lab. Engineering parameters related to geotechnical grouting, soil mechanics, static and dynamic structure properties, FRP material properties, concrete stability, and steel/concrete structure, can be measured and evaluated in these labs. Some testing equipments, such as dynamic triaxial compression machines for soil and rock, are used for key projects funded by national ministries. These equipments function better than most similar equipments in the world. The Civil Engineering department has receives more than 80 research projects in the last few years, where 3 projects have been awarded by the national authorities, and 23 by provincial levels. 478 research papers are published and more than 100 of these papers are indexed by either SCI, EI or ISTP. 5 national patents are also received.
